JAMMU, Jan 14: Congress has expressed great concern over the emerging situation due to continuous closure of National Highway and urged the State administration to take emergency steps in this regard.
In a statement president J&K Pradesh Congress Committee GA Mir has said that the people in Kashmir Valley were already facing hardships due to recent heavy snowfall and a lethargic administration and now the closure of highway has multiplied their woes manifold.
He said that there is shortage of essential commodities and prices are sky rocketing while thousands of people are stranded on Highway on different places. He said that in the past, the elected Governments used to stock rations and other essentials in Kashmir valley, Ladakh and snow bound areas in Jammu region before the onset of winter but now all such practices have become things of past.
Mir urged the Lt Governor that essential commodities for valley should be airlifted on warfooting and also steps be taken to evacuate the stranded passengers from different places.
Expressing serious concern over the continuous closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, senior PCC leader, GN Monga questioned the preparedness of the administration in dealing with the crisis arising out of the highway closure in the Valley.
In a statement Monga said the highway has remained blocked for most of the days in January due to which there has been acute shortage of essential commodities, like vegetables, LPG and petroleum products in Kashmir.
“Now it is being told that the highway may remain closed for 10 more days. What was the administration doing when they knew such a situation can arise? Why did they make alternate arrangements to ensure that the road remains open for supplies,” Monga asked. Monga alleged that Govt miserably failed in handling the highway crisis and has left thousands of people stranded on either side of the highway in lurch.
