BHADERWAH, Nov 21: Jammu University Vice-Chancellor Prof R.D. Sharma toady inaugurated 2nd conference on “Change in Cryosphere, its Impact on Ecosystem Services and Rural Livelihoods: Climate Change, Agricultural and Sustainable Development in the Himalayan Region”, here in Bhaderwah Campus of the university.
A number of academicians and scientists of national and international repute attended the conference.
On the occasion, a souvenir of the conference was also launched by Prof R D Sharma, who was accompanied by Naresh Gupta, MLC, Bhaderwah; Prof G M Bhat, Rector, Bhaderwah Campus; Padam Shri Er Sonam Norphel and Dr Anuradha Sharma, HoD, Deptt Of Geography, JU.
A lifetime achievement award was presented to Er Sonam Norphel for his contribution made for the creation of artificial glaciers in the Leh region. In his keynote address, he highlighted the relevance of artificial glaciers for water harvesting in the higher altitude regions. He also shared his lifetime experiences with the audience present.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof R D Sharma appreciated the contributions made by Bhaderwah campus. He emphasized for broader outreach of scientific findings for societal benefits.
On this occasion, MLC Naresh Gupta sanctioned Rs 3 lakh to the Department of Geography, Bhaderwah Campus for the establishment of remote sensing and GIS lab.
The welcome address was given by Prof G M Bhat while vote of thanks was delivered by Chhering Tandup, Assistant Professor, Deptt of Earth Sciences, IME, Bhaderwah Campus.
Others, present on the occasion, included Prof. Dipankar Sengupta, Dr Pankaj Mehta, Dr Sarfaraz Asgar, Dr Shashi Prabha, Dr Rakesh Jasrotia and Dr Rajinder Charak. The conference is being attended by students as well as scholars from institutes across North India, including JNU, SKUAST Kashmir, SKUAST Jammu, KVK- Bhaderwah and Punjab University.
