JAMMU, Mar 30: Senior BJP leader and former Minister, Choudhary Sukhnandan Kumar has strongly criticized the Omar Government for its failure to ensure adequate supply of commercial LPG cylinders, alleging that poor management of concerned consumer departments has led to an artificial shortage and black marketing, severely affecting small businesses during the forthcoming marriage season.
In a statement issued, Kumar said that caterers, restaurant owners, and small Dhaba operators in Jammu city and rural areas are facing immense hardships due to the non-availability of commercial LPG cylinders. “The marriage season has already begun, and the shortage of LPG cylinders has created a crisis for those whose livelihood depends on timely availability of cooking gas,” he said.
He alleged that despite there being no actual shortage of LPG at the national level, mismanagement by departments such as the Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCSCA) and other consumer-related agencies has resulted in hoarding and black marketing. “Due to the negligence of the concerned departments, black marketers are taking advantage of the situation and selling commercial cylinders at inflated prices,” Kumar added.
Targeting the Omar Abdullah-led Government, Kumar said the Government must take immediate corrective measures and ensure proper distribution mechanisms. Referring to Omar Abdullah, he urged the UT Government to issue clear directions to officials to curb hoarding and maintain strict vigilance on the ground.
Kumar further stated that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in an exclusive meeting with Chief Ministers of all states and UTs, has already advised them to ensure proper supply and distribution of essential commodities, including LPG. “The Government should follow the guidelines issued by the PM and act swiftly to control the situation,” he said.
He emphasized the urgent need to deploy officers at the ground level to monitor supply chains and prevent exploitation of consumers.
Seeking high-level intervention, Kumar appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take cognizance of the issue and direct the concerned departments to act decisively.
The BJP leader warned that if timely action is not taken, the crisis could further escalate, impacting not only small businesses but also the overall functioning of the hospitality sector in the region.
