Commerce College organises symposium on anti-ragging

JAMMU, Aug 18: In a step towards promoting a safe and inclusive campus environment, Govt SPMR College of Commerce organised a symposium and poster making competition on anti ragging under the theme ‘Ragging as a Social Evil: From College Campuses to Society at Large’.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of various colleges and schools of Cluster University of Jammu. The programme began with a formal welcome address by Dr Deepshikha Sharma from Department of English.
The symposium featured talks and presentation by students, faculty members and guest speakers. Speakers shared the real life experiences and discussed the legal framework under the UGC Regulations on curbing the menace of ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009.
The poster making competition provided a creative platform for the students to visually express their views against ragging. Students prepared vibrant and thought provoking posters carrying strong messages of empathy, unity and zero tolerance towards harassment.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr D S Manhas, Dean Students Welfare, Cluster University of Jammu, emphasized on the importance of maintaining ragging free educational atmosphere. He highlighted the psychological and legal consequences of ragging and encouraged students to foster bound of mutual respect and support.
In the symposium competition, Manmeet Kour from GGM Science College bagged first position whereas second position was shared by Priyansha of School of Social Sciences and Taranpreet Kour of Govt SPMR College of Commerce and third position went to Mahi Gupta of GCW, Gandhinagar.
In the poster making competition, Sonakshi Sharma from Govt SPMR College of Commerce secured first prize while second and third positions were secured by Mohd Zaigham Salaria from GGM Science College and Mansi Rajput of GCOE respectively.
The symposium competition was adjudged by Dr Monika Malholtra and Prof Shivani Kotwal while Poster Making Competition was adjudged by Rakesh Sharma, HoD Institute of Fine Arts and Rohit Verma, Instructor Painting, Institute of Fine Arts.
Dr. Rajinder Singh, Principal of the College urged everyone present to be ambassadors of kindness and stand up against ragging in any form. The entire event was coordinated and managed by Prof Ashwani Kumar, Convener Anti Ragging Committee and other committee members Dr Deepshikha Sharma, Prof Sanjeev Kumar, Dr Jagmeet Kaur, Dr Roomi Rani, Prof Esha, Dr Rajni Sharma and Dr Mamta Rani.
