CME on ‘Geriatric Mental Health’ held at Gandhi Nagar Hospital

JAMMU, Feb 29: A CME cum awareness workshop on ‘Geriatric Mental Health’ under National Health Mission Programme (NHMP) was organized today in Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu under the supervision of Medical Superintendent, Dr Chander Parkash.
Doctors, paramedical staff, nursing staff, counselors and supporting staff attended the workshop, during which issues related to psychological/mental health including Dementia (Alzheimer), Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis, etc of elderly people were discussed in detail and the preventive and management aspects were discussed in detail by the resource person, Dr Akhil Menia (Psychiatrist at Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar).
In the concluding remarks, Dr Chander Parkash said that Geriatric mental health is very important, neglected issue with poor sensitivity amongst patients, care givers and administrators, and it needs to be taken seriously as elderly people are the valuable assets of the society having great wisdom gained from life time experiences in the shape of greater moral values which needs to be passed to younger generation for social, cultural and spiritual development of the society.
“There is dire need to raise the awareness among the general masses and other professionals about the silent epidemic of Geriatric mental health problems by the health professionals in collaboration with other allied departments of various Government/non-Government organizations,” Dr Parkash added.
