CMC nodal centre trains medical colleges for new curriculum of MBBS

JAMMU, July 12: MCI Nodal Centre for Faculty Development, Christian Medical College (CMC) Ludhiana is training allocated medical colleges by conducting three day program “Curriculum Implementation Support Program (CISP)” as MBBS course is going to have a new competency based curriculum from 1 August, 2019.
Medical Council of India (MCI) is training medical teachers for implementation of new curriculum and CMC Ludhiana is one of the nodal centres of MCI for training of medical teachers.
Dr William Bhatti, Director, CMC Ludhiana inaugurated the 3-day program on July 11. He emphasized the shift in curriculum based on the changing needs of the professions and the society. He added that CMC has taken a lead in training the teachers of medical colleges. Earlier, Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Principal, CMC Ludhiana presented welcome address.
Dr Dinesh Badyal, Convener of MCI Nodal center informed that the present curriculum was implemented in 1997 and now after 22 years the MBBS 2019 batch will have a new curriculum based on integrated teaching and early clinical exposure. Dr Badyal who is also Member of MCI Expert group on implementation of new curriculum added that all medical colleges are being trained so that the implementation of the new curriculum happens smoothly and phase wise.
The CISP training has sessions on integrated teaching across various subjects, early clinical exposure starting from year one, skills acquisition and development of skills & simulation labs, electives in various specialized areas, changes in examination system and introduction of new methods in teaching learning and assessment. The medical students graduating under new curriculum will be known as Indian Medical Graduate (IMG).
The IMG has 5 roles that include Clinician, Communicator, Life-long learner, Leader and Professional. Each of these roles is to be achieved through various competencies which have been defined by MCI and are available on MCI website. One of the major additions is one month foundation course where students will learn about professionalism, language, computer, stress management, etc.
