Clinics involved in sex determination will face serious punishment: DDC

JAMMU, July 7: District Development Commissioner Jammu, Ajeet Kumar Sahu today convened a meeting of District Advisory Committee (DAC) to review implementation of Jammu and Kashmir Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Sex Determination Prohibition and Regulation Act, 2002.
During the meeting, threadbare discussion was held on approval to authorized ultrasound clinics in Jammu and approval was given to 8 ultrasound clinics. Committee also cancelled registration of 3 ultrasound clinics under PC&PNDT Act.
The Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Chairman of the Committee said that approval will be given to those ultrasound clinics who have fulfilled all legal formalities. He said that any clinic involved in non-medical foetus gender determination and sex-selective abortions will face serious punishment.
He also said that unlicensed clinics will be shut down and their equipment used for illegal medical practices will be confiscated. Besides, the PNDT modalities were also discussed in length and the DDC directed the concerned CMO to constitute district level committee which will keep vigil on suspicious ultrasound centres and nursing homes to reduce the menace of illegal abortions and sex determination.
Stressing for creating awareness regarding PC & PNDT Act among the masses, DDC  called for utilizing the services of ASHAs, and  Anganwadi workers. However, DDC also directed the committee members to ensure regular inspections of ultrasound clinics and submit the reports for follow up action under PC&PNDT Act.
CMO Jammu Dr Arvind Raina, Deputy Director Information Jyoti Slathia, MS Govt hospital Gandhi Nagar Dr. Ramesh Gupta, President of NGO ‘Savera’ Dr. Gurmeet Singh besides other members of the committee were present  in the meeting.
