Srinagar, Jan 9: With over a thousand challans pending in Kashmir alone, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has directed owners and operators of two-wheeler vehicles across the Kashmir Division to clear all pending traffic violation challans within seven days.
In this regard, a communication issued by Regional Transport Officer Qazi Irfan states that it has come to the department’s notice that several registered two-wheelers are being operated in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The primary offences highlighted by the RTO include riders and pillion riders not wearing protective helmets, along with other traffic rule violations.
According to officials, a total of 1,257 two-wheeler challans are pending across J&K, with 1,051 of them in Kashmir alone.
“Each vehicle has between five and nine challans, and directions have been issued to clear these without further delay,” an official said.
The RTO emphasized that such breaches not only flout statutory law but also pose a “serious threat to road safety and public order, thereby endangering human life and property.”
The department has warned of stringent consequences for non-compliance within the stipulated one-week period.
Action may include the imposition of additional penalties, suspension of driving documents, and even the seizure of vehicles, without any further notice.
