Srinagar, Dec 11: Clashes erupted between youths and security forces in Saraf Kadal area of Old City after Friday prayers.
Witnesses said dozens of youths after staging protests in Nowhatta and Rajouri Kadal marched towards Saraf Kadal where they resorted to stone-pelting on already deployed security personnel, triggering clashes.
The clashes between two sides continued for more than an hour during which police used teargas and pepper gas to disperse the stone-throwers. Earlier, the protesters waved flags of Islamic State (IS) and Pakistan in Nowhatta.
Meanwhile, a shutdown was observed in Maisuma and its adjoining markets on the call of Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen outfit against the alleged blasphemous remarks of Hindu Mahasabha working president Kamlesh Tiwara.
