Civil Society lodges protest against move to shift CUK campus

SRINAGAR, Feb 16: Civil Society Ganderbal a conglomerate of about one dozen organizations held a get together at Town Hall Ganderbal today and registered their protest against the Government move to shift the Central University campus from Ganderbal to other area of Valley.
The participants warned that in case the University campus were shifted from Ganderbal district to any other part of Valley people will launch a massive agitation and the Government will be responsible for all the consequences.
They said the construction work on University campus has started near about a decade back in Ganderbal district and crores of rupees were spent on the same. In case the campus are shifted this entire money will go down the drain and it will be a huge loss to State exchequer.
The Civil Society sought immediate intervention of Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti  in the matter and said that the discriminative treatment towards the district will not be allowed at any cost.
The organizations who participated included Citizens Welfare Forum Ganderbal, led by Ghulam Mohammed Sofi, Fruit Growers Association led by Manzoor Ahmed Parra, Teachers Forum led by Mohammed Ashraf, Dr Khurshid a prominent citizen of the area, Sheikh Rubani a Trade Union leader, Noor Mohammed Sheikh of State Pensioners and Senior Citizens Welfare Society, Sheikh Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din ,State Pensioners general secretary and  Abdul Razak Dar, secretary Peoples Welfare Society Ganderbal.
Meanwhile in a statement president Pensioners and Senior Citizens Welfare Society, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani has warned the Government not to try to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in Ganderbal by such decisions as it will prove counterproductive.
He said earlier Islamic University proposal was also for Ganderbal and that too was shifted to Awantipora in Pulwama district of South Kashmir on political considerations. He said Ganderbal is the Central place of Valley and it is equidistant from Kupwara in North Kashmir to Kulgam in South Kashmir.
Mir said even it is strange that the assurance given by higher authorities of Education Department the campus of Central University were not shifted to Ganderbal where some buildings have already been constructed till date.
