JAMMU, Feb 14: The Cyber Crime Investigation Centre for Excellence (CICE), Crime Branch Jammu, has recovered Rs 25.60 lakh in two separate cyber-enabled fraud cases through prompt and coordinated action.
A CICE Jammu official said in the first case, a senior citizen was duped of Rs 6.50 lakh after she clicked on a malicious APK file titled “Jal Shakti Bill” received through WhatsApp.
He said the fraudsters gained access to her banking details and siphoned off the amount.
Acting swiftly, the CICE official said the enquiry officer SI Pranav Dogra, in coordination with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and bank nodal officers, managed to get the entire amount refunded to the victim’s account.
The team also helped safeguard another Rs 6 lakh lying in her account by guiding her to deactivate call forwarding services through the Cyber Helpline 1930, preventing further loss.
In another case, the CICE Jammu official said a renowned doctor from Jammu was defrauded of Rs 22.90 lakh through his American Express credit card after clicking on a malicious APK file titled “Challan”.
Following sustained follow-up with the concerned financial institutions, the enquiry officer Inspector Pradeep Singh succeeded in getting Rs 19.10 lakh reverted to the victim’s account, he said.
According to him, the recoveries were made possible due to timely reporting, continuous liaison with banks and intermediaries, and professional investigation by the CICE team.
The action was carried out under the supervision of DySP Albeena Malik, SHO Police Station CICE Jammu, and overall supervision of SSP CICE Ramnish Gupta.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the Cyber Crime Investigation Centre for Excellence has appealed to the public to remain cautious of unknown APK files, fake bill notifications and suspicious links received through WhatsApp or other social media platforms.
