Christians take out Good Friday processions, offer special prayers

JAMMU, Apr 18: On the occasion of Good Friday, St Peter’s Catholic Church, Prem Nagar and St Mary’s Garrison Church, Gandhinagar, organized separate processions for displaying the suffering and death of Jesus on the Cross.

Holding wooden crosses and meditating on Christ’s suffering, the faithful walked in prayer and reverence, retracing the final steps of Jesus on His way to Calvary.
The procession by St Peter’s Catholic Church began from Candle Church Chowk at Christian Colony and passed through Shaheedi Chowk, Residency Road, Vivekanand Chowk and Jogi Gate Road before culmination at the St Peter’s Catholic Church.
The annual commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ by the parish faithful depicted the suffering of Jesus through the streets of Jerusalem to Calvary Hills. Dressed in a sorrowful manner and recalling crowds of Jerusalem, a large number of faithful participated in the procession,
As the procession reached the Catholic Church, there was a Good Friday service which was conducted by the priests of the community.
A similar procession by St Mary’s Garrison Church, Gandhinagar, began from Valmiki Colony and passed through Aquaf Market, Gole Market, Apsara Road, and Last Morh before culmination at St Mary’s Garrison Church.
A live tableau portraying scenes from the Passion of Christ was presented through the streets of Gandhinagar, touching hearts and renewing faith. The scenes powerfully communicated the central Christian values of love, forgiveness, peace, and the victory of the Resurrection through suffering.
At the culmination of the rally, Rt Rev Bishop Ivan Albert Pereira led the faithful in special prayers at the church, offering intercessions for peace, unity, and spiritual renewal. Rev. Fr. Sebastian Nagathunkal, the Parish Priest of St Mary’s Garrison Church, also spoke on the occasion.
The Passion Friday services were concelebrated by Fr Jafat Masih, Fr Varkey Thenganakunnel, Rev Fr Santosh Athickal, and other clergy members.
