EIJING, June 26 : Beijing hopes that China and the United States will find the right way to coexist as two major powers, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.
On Wednesday, Wang and Professor Graham Allison from Harvard University met in Beijing.
During the meeting, the Chinese foreign minister expressed hope that the US side would work with Beijing to address the fundamental issue of mutual recognition, paving the way for the two countries to establish a harmonious relationship based on the three principles of China-US relations.
The three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping are the fundamental principles for China to deal with US affairs, Wang added.
This comes amid trade tensions between the two countries. On April 2, the US president signed an executive order that implemented reciprocal tariffs on imports from various countries. On April 9, Trump declared that a baseline tariff of 10% would be imposed for 90 days on over 75 countries that had not retaliated and had requested negotiations, except for China.
On May 10-11, China and the US held high-level trade and economic talks in Geneva. The talks were coordinated by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on the Chinese side and by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the US side. The parties said following the talks that they had agreed on a preliminary deal to reduce trade tariffs, which came into effect on May 14 for 90 days. “Reciprocal” tariffs between the countries were to be reduced to 10%. As a result, Beijing will impose a 10% tariff on American imports, while Washington will charge 30% on Chinese products, since the 20% “fentanyl” tariff remains in effect.
