SRINAGAR, July 30: A children’s park in Ganderbal’s Kangan lies in a state of neglect due to poor maintenance and lack of civic sense among locals.
Constructed last year at a cost of several crores under the Capex budget, the park’s deteriorating condition not only raises questions about the alertness of the authorities but also reflects the lack of responsibility among residents.
Locals say the park, envisioned as a recreational space for children, is now barely usable.
They said the area is littered with garbage, stray dogs roam freely, and the main gate is broken.
“This park was constructed in 2024 at a cost of crores for the benefit of children,” said Basharat Hussain, a local resident.
“But no proper maintenance has been done. The administration should have ensured earthing and regular upkeep. On top of that, locals are dumping garbage here, defacing the park.”
He added that stray dogs roaming freely and the broken gate discourage parents from allowing their children to use the facility.
With no one held accountable, residents have also begun parking vehicles inside the park premises, further reducing its utility.
“Vehicles are parked inside despite the availability of alternative spaces. The gate is broken, and people easily drive in,” he said.
Block Development Officer (BDO) Kangan, Amarjeet Singh, acknowledged the issues but dismissed claims that the project was incomplete.
“The park was constructed under the Capex budget. It is not incomplete. The pending earthing work and the repair of the gate will be taken up. People also need to act responsibly and dispose off garbage in designated dustbins. The deficiencies will be addressed,” he said.
