JAMMU, Dec 5: In an outreach initiative ahead of the upcoming 4th National Lok Adalat slated for December 13, R N Watal, Principal District & Sessions Judge and Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Jammu held a detailed interaction with media persons today to highlight the objectives, scope and expected outcomes of the nationwide exercise.
Addressing the media, the Chairman emphasised that National Lok Adalats remain a vital platform for delivering accessible, affordable and expeditious justice and significantly reducing pendency by encouraging settlement through conciliation. He appealed to the public-especially litigants with pending matters-to make full use of the opportunity.
A day earlier, on December 4, Watal chaired an extensive review meeting with Judicial Officers to assess preparedness for the forthcoming Lok Adalat. The meeting focused on ensuring that all arrangements are streamlined for the smooth conduct of the event across courts in Jammu district.
The key areas deliberated upon included identification of suitable cases that can be effectively resolved through Lok Adalat benches, logistical and infrastructural arrangements including venue readiness, adequate staff deployment and necessary support systems and awareness generation among the public to enhance participation and allow litigants to benefit from amicable, cost-effective settlements.
The Chairman reiterated that the National Lok Adalat represents one of the most significant components of the access-to-justice framework and must be executed with utmost diligence and uniformity.
Later in the day, the Chairman convened another high-level meeting with Bank Managers, their Advocates, Divisional Managers of Insurance Companies, their legal representatives and heads/representatives of various financial institutions.
The meeting was attended by Khem Raj, Presiding Officer, Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Jammu, Amarjeet Singh Langeh, Presiding Officer, Fast Track Court Jammu & Incharge Addl. District Judge Bank Court, Rajni Sharma, Addl. Sessions Judge Anti-Corruption Jammu and Maleeka Sharma, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority Jammu.
During the deliberations, Divisional Managers of Insurance Companies were directed to proactively pursue amicable settlements, particularly in motor accident and insurance-related cases, to maximise disposal on Lok Adalat day. Bank representatives were also urged to utilise the forum for compromise-based resolutions of loan recovery matters.
Reaffirming the judiciary’s dedication to public service, the Chairman noted that National Lok Adalats significantly alleviate the burden on courts while offering litigants faster and mutually acceptable outcomes. The ongoing review exercise, he said, demonstrates DLSA Jammu’s proactive approach in ensuring that the December 13 Lok Adalat is conducted efficiently and benefits the maximum number of people.
