Centre gives extension to 74 PMGSY-I roads till Mar 2027

JAMMU, Apr 2: The Union Government has given one year’s extension to 74 PMGSY-I roads involving funds worth over Rs 300 crores in the Jammu and Kashmir till March 2027.
The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Shivraj Singh Chouhan for approving the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s proposal to extend the timeline of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Phase-I till March 2027.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister extended gratitude to the Union Minister and said, ” the extension will play a crucial role in facilitating the completion of several important rural road projects across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.”
He noted that the decision will significantly strengthen connectivity in remote and rural areas, ensuring better access to essential services and boosting overall development in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Union Joint Secretary in the Rural Development Department, Aditi Singh communicated to the Chief Secretary of the J&K about the Ministry’s decision. The letter confirmed that besides UT of J&K, the extension has been granted to the other states and the UTs as well. It was mentioned that besides J&K and Chhatisgarh, such proposals were received from some other UTs and states as well.
It was clarified by the Union Ministry that no further extension will be given beyond March 31, 2027. The letter further said that the works which have not been tendered so far or not started on ground, will be dropped and moreover, the works which have been started on the ground but are not feasible/ possible to continue further for any reason, shall be foreclosed. The administrative secretaries shall take monthly review of these works, ensuring timely completion of these works.
Pertinent to mention here that out of the total 3093 roads sanctioned under PMGSY-I in J&K having total length of 18370 kms, all others have been completed except 74 rural roads having length of 347 kms. Chhatisgarh (206), followed by Manipur (133) are on the top in the list having higher number of left out PMGSY roads.
