JAMMU, Sept 27: Chief Executive Councilor (CEC), Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Rigzin Spalbar today called on Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Kiran Dingra, Joint Secretary Tomar and Director Geeta at Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi and discussed the potential of producing world’s finest pashmina in Ladakh region to ensure sustainable economic development of nomads.
Threadbare discussion was held on the integrated project already submitted to Ministry of Textile which includes Ladakh Pashmina development, nutrition support for livestock, medical facilities to nomads, fodder for winter months and housing for nomad herders.
The CEC asserted that these projects holds great importance to keep the nomadic tribe alive and to boost Pashmina production in Changthang region which will act a magic wand in improving the living and economic condition of the nomads, who at present are migrating to the city to look for other means to meet their ends.
Seeking support of Ministry of Textile, the CEC said, “LAHDC is working on schemes and projects to make the lives of nomadic community of Changthang secure in their own region by facilitating Pashmina production but facing difficulties in achieving the goal in the absence of good facility and market support”. He also sought financial assistance for upgradation of existing Pashmina Dehairing Plant in Leh.
Executive Councilor Tourism and Chairman Changthang Pashmina Grower Association, Gurmet Dorjey, Mahesh, Executive Director Wool Expo Mumbai and Central Wool Board officials were also present in the meeting.
