JAMMU, Sept 17: The Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Jammu president Arun Gupta in a communication to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed serious concern over the severe economic hardships and disruptions faced by the business community in Jammu & Kashmir.
Gupta in his letter mentioned that Jammu region has been severely impacted by a dual crisis, the tragic terror attack on April 22, 2025, and the subsequent security situation. This has been compounded by a series of devastating natural calamities, including heavy rains, landslides, cloudbursts and flash floods across many parts of Jammu division.
He further mentioned that the situation on the ground is dire, because of a cloudburst at Chashoti in Paddar area of Kishtwar, resulting in 70 deaths. Dozens of people are still missing, He said the track of Mata Vaishno Devi was also severely damaged with over 40 lives having lost and around 100 people missing. The heavy rainfall and flash floods have caused collapse of several bridges and the rising water level of the Tawi and Chenab rivers has submerged vast areas, damaging paddy crop.
He further said these events have left a majority of business activities non-functional. “We are confident that under your leadership, the Central Government will provide financial assistance to the effected families based on their actual losses,” JCCI chief said.
Gupta requested the Prime Minister of India to instruct Insurance companies to immediately release atleast 90% of the Insurance compensation for residential, commercial, or vehicle-related damages. This will provide immediate relief to the victims and help them to begin the process of recovery, he added.
Chamber chief also requested the Prime Minister Modi that Jammu region has not witnessed such devastation in the last 100 years and the people of Jammu are in dire need of Central help, just as provided relief during the 2014 floods in Kashmir, the time has come to stand with the people of Jammu.
