SAMBA, Dec 11: In a road accident, a car smuggling cattle broke through a naka barrier and hit a policeman, leaving him seriously injured, while two smugglers died on the spot and another was seriously hurt.
The incident unfolded around 9:00 pm when a car, loaded with two cattle, was travelling from Samba to Mansar.
Police at the Nud naka signalled the vehicle to stop, but the smugglers instead accelerated, running over a policeman in the process.
The officer, identified as Havaldar Mohinder Singh, was severely injured and immediately taken to the District Hospital Samba for first aid. He was later referred to the Jammu Government Hospital for further treatment.
Following the collision, the smugglers’ car continued for a few meters before falling into a deep ditch.
The injured smuggler, identified as 24-year-old Younis, was also shifted to the District Hospital Samba and later referred to the Jammu Government Hospital for better treatment.
According to police sources, the smugglers appeared to have consumed large quantities of drugs.
The cattle, one of which died in the crash and the other slightly injured, were being transported in a luxury car with the number plate MP04HC-6951.
Authorities, including Police Station In-Charge Samba Sandeep Charak, arrived at the scene to oversee the investigation. The police have registered a case and are continuing to probe the incident.
