TORONTO, Jan 27 : Canada will send a patrol vessel to the opening of the country’s consulate in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, next week, the Canadian Press news outlet reported, citing Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
The deployment would involve a vessel specifically designed for Arctic patrols, the minister said. It will be a Canadian Coast Guard vessel, not a Royal Canadian Navy ship, Anand’s office clarified.
Last week, Anand said that Ottawa intended to increase its presence in the Arctic and would open a consulate in Greenland next month.
Greenland is part of the Danish Kingdom. However, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that it should join the US, arguing the islands’ strategic importance for national security.
Danish and Greenlandic authorities have warned Washington against seizing the island, noting that they expect their territorial integrity to be respected.
