Cabinet meets today to clear budgetary proposals with focus on welfare measures

Budget for 2026-27 likely to be around Rs 1.20 lakh cr
*Ruling NC’s commitments to be included

JAMMU, Feb 1: The Omar Abdullah Cabinet will meet here tomorrow to finalize budgetary proposals amid reports that some welfare measures including commitments of ruling National Conference are likely to be part of annual budget to be presented by the Chief Minister on February 6.
“The Cabinet to be chaired by Omar Abdullah will meet at the CM’s official residence at 3 PM,’’ official sources told the Excelsior.
The budget session of the UT Assembly is beginning tomorrow with LG Manoj Sinha’s address followed by the obituary reference and will be over around 12.30 PM. The Cabinet will meet at 3 PM followed by the NC Legislature Party meet at 4 PM.
Officials said the budget of Jammu and Kashmir is expected to be around Rs 1.20 lakh crore for next financial year of 2026-27.

“The Cabinet will finalize welfare measures it intends to announce in the budget. A positive news is also expected about the Daily Rates Workers (DRWs),’’ the sources said, adding the welfare measures including some of which are part of NC’s election manifesto or assured otherwise by the Government will be cleared by the Cabinet to become part of the budget.
All Cabinet decisions are subject to approval of LG Manoj Sinha.
Omar, who also holds charge of the Finance Ministry, will present his second budget on February 6 after replying to debate on the LG’s Address on February 5 in the legislature.
The budget will cover all sectors as the UT Government wants all sections of society to benefit, the sources said, adding the Cabinet will take up proposals mooted by different departments for inclusion in the budget especially the welfare steps for the people.
“Development remains the focus,’’ they said.
As per the sources, priority of tomorrow’s Cabinet is budgetary proposals and, therefore, there is very less agenda taken from the departments. However, few agenda items are expected to be cleared, they said.
