Bureaucratic arrogance a threat to democracy: Rajesh Gupta

JAMMU, Apr 4: National Conference senior leader Rajesh Gupta today expressed deep concern over the indifferent attitude of the bureaucracy towards the Legislative Assembly, calling it a serious threat to democratic accountability.
In a statement issued, Gupta stated that the continued absence of senior officers during crucial proceedings, especially Question Hour, reflects a growing sense of unaccountability within the administrative system.
“The Assembly is the highest democratic institution and ignoring it amounts to disrespecting the mandate of the people,” he said.
Taking a strong stand, Gupta remarked, “If bureaucrats ignore elected representatives, then who will listen to the common people? This trend is deeply alarming and unacceptable in any democratic setup.”
“Such behavior creates a dangerous gap between governance and the public, weakening public trust in institutions. Officers must understand that they are accountable to the people through their elected representatives. Any deviation from this principle undermines the very foundation of democracy,” Gupta asserted.
He urged the Government to take immediate steps to ensure the presence of senior officers in the House whenever matters related to their departments are discussed, warning that continued negligence will erode the credibility of governance.
“Democracy cannot survive if bureaucracy begins to function without accountability. The supremacy of the Assembly must be upheld at all costs,” he added.
