JAMMU, Mar 23: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has issued a detailed clarification on the death of a BSF jawan in Amritsar, asserting that all mandated legal procedures have been set in motion.
In a press statement, the agency said the deceased jawan, Jaswinder Singh of New Diwangarh, Chakroi, RS Pura, was arrested by the NCB Jammu Unit on March 3, 2026 in connection with a case involving seizure of a commercial quantity of heroin.
It added that his brother, Pupinder Singh, had already been arrested in the same case and is a habitual offender with multiple NDPS cases registered against him in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
The agency said Jaswinder Singh was also arrested in another case on March 12 related to recovery of a commercial quantity of Tramadol, with his custody extended periodically by the court.
The NCB stated that his involvement surfaced during technical analysis, which indicated his alleged links with drug smugglers operating from Pakistan, Punjab and Jammu.
According to the NCB, Jaswinder Singh was taken to Amritsar on March 19 for further investigation, where he developed chest pain and was immediately admitted to a hospital.
He reportedly suffered two cardiac events and died on the morning of March 20, the agency said.
Terming the incident as unfortunate, the NCB said that in line with guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and directions of the Supreme Court, multiple inquiries have been initiated, including inquest proceedings by a Judicial Magistrate, a magisterial probe by the Executive Magistrate, and a post-mortem examination.
The NCB added that intimation has also been sent to the NHRC through local police, and all prescribed protocols are being strictly followed while reports are awaited.
