SAMBA, Sept 30: Two brothers were arrested in Samba for brutally assaulting a Jammu and Kashmir Police Special Operations Group (SOG) jawan and two of his friends over a minor dispute near Bantalab.
Police said the incident occurred when the jawan, who was on leave, was travelling home with two friends.
An argument broke out with one of the accused over giving way to his vehicle, which soon turned into a scuffle, they said.
Police said the accused’s brother also reached the spot later and joined in, attacking the policeman and others with a stick.
“The SOG jawan collapsed on the road and his vehicle was also vandalized. He was first taken to District Hospital Samba, then referred to AIIMS Vijaypur in critical condition, and later shifted to a private hospital in Punjab for advanced treatment,” a police official said.
According to him, the other two youths sustained minor injuries and were discharged after treatment.
Videos of the assault, recorded by bystanders, went viral on social media, sparking widespread anger and called for strict action.
Acting swiftly, police arrested the accused late Monday night. They were identified as Sukhwinder Singh (45) and Ranbir Singh (47), both residents of Bantalab, Samba.
A case under the relevant sections of the law has also been registered against the accused and further investigation is underway, police said.
