SRINAGAR, June 27: A brief morning shower today triggered severe waterlogging in the Naribal Colony of Srinagar’s Soura area, forcing residents to evacuate and move essential items to safer places.

Locals blamed the flooding on a faulty drainage system that they said has remained unattended for more than three decades. Residents said that the rain lasted only 10 minutes but inundated the entire locality, which comprises around 60 households. “We had to shift the sick and even an expectant mother to a nearby area,” said a resident, accusing authorities of ignoring their repeated pleas.
Several residents said they had approached Government officials, including the area MLA, asking for repairs to the clogged drains, but received no response. “I sent him videos and messages, but he did not reply. Had it been election time, the MLA would have reached here at 6 am. But today, not a single official has visited,” one local complained.
Only local police were seen visiting the area, residents said, while civic and administrative officials stayed away. “All our essentials – rice and other food items – are under water. This has been happening under every Government – whether PDP or NC. No one has fixed it,” said another resident.
