UDHAMPUR, Sept 25: Collapse of the vital bridge on Tawi River at Bant village in recent flash floods continues to severely affect routine life of thousands of villagers, particularly students, who are now forced to risk their lives crossing the river.
The bridge collapse occurred on August 26, cutting off over 50,000 residents from more than 20 villages and 10 Panchayats. The bridge, which spanned the River Tawi, was a vital connection between the local community and the Udhampur district headquarters. The bridge, built just nine years ago, was a crucial lifeline for the residents, providing access to essential services, schools, and markets.
The bridge’s collapse has significantly affected students, who are now forced to risk their lives crossing the river. Many students are being carried across the river on the shoulders of family members or locals, highlighting the urgent need for a safe and reliable crossing point.
Officials said that collaboration with the Indian Army is underway to urgently reconstruct the bridge. The reconstruction efforts aim to restore safe passage for the residents and provide a reliable connection between the villages and the district headquarters.
Residents have expressed their gratitude for the efforts being made to rebuild the bridge, but also emphasize the need for sustainable solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
