SAMBA, May 25: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) died while another cop sustained injuries after bovine smugglers rammed their vehicle into a police naka at Phulpur area of Samba district today.
Acting on a tip off, a police team led by ASI Yog Raj Singh had set up the barricades at Phulpur area under the jurisdiction of Police Post Supwal to stop a cattle smuggling attempt, a police official said.
Around 4:15 am, when the police team signalled the suspected vehicle coming from the International Border side, the smugglers sped up and hit the barricades to crush the police personnel, he said, adding, “ASI Yograj Singh sustained critical injuries in the incident, while another cop accompanying him received minor injuries.”

This was the second incident of attack on the police personnel since last month in Samba district as earlier in April, an SHO, a PSI, and a Selection grade Constable (SgCT) came under attack from the narcotics smugglers during a raid in drug hotspot Balol Khad area falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Bari Brahmana.
Meanwhile, people in Samba district sat on a dharna and lodged a strong protest against the killing of the ASI and frequent incidents of bovine and drug smuggling in the district.
Raising slogans against the smugglers, locals demanded that the Government should take harshest possible measures to root out the menace of the bovine and drug smuggling from the Samba district.
One of the protesting women said, “If an ASI ranked officer is not safe from the smugglers, do you think public can feel safe?”
“Time has come for the Government to take the strictest measures against the smugglers who are residing in villages close to the International Border,” she said.
