Srinagar, May 4: Body of a youth who was picked up by security forces for questioning earlier this week was recovered from a rivulet in Kulgam district of South Kashmir today.
The Health Minister Sakeena Itoo demanded judicial probe into the death of Imtiyaz Ahmad Magray, 23, son of Nazir Ahmad Magray, a resident of Tangmarg, Kulgam whose body was fished out from the Adbal stream in the Aharbal area of Kulgam district this morning.
Itoo said that he was picked up and was detained in Behi Bagh Camp by security forces. “His relatives who went to the camp a day before were told that he will be released. Today, the body was recovered and it was of Magray who was picked up by police 3 days ago for investigation,” she said.
The Minister said a terror environment is being created in the area. “I urge Lt Governor that a judicial probe should be conducted into the death of Magray so that the truth comes out,” she said.
She urged the LG that the Home Department should issue instructions that the common people should not be harassed.
The PDP president Mehbooba Mufti in a post on X, said, “Yet another body has been recovered from a river in Kulgam raising serious allegations of foul play. Local residents allege that Imtiyaz Magray was picked up by the army two days ago and now mysteriously his body has surfaced in the river.”
The former Chief Minister said the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam appears to be a calculated attempt to derail the fragile peace, disrupt tourism in Kashmir and undermine communal harmony across the country.
“If a single act of violence can shake the entire system, triggering arbitrary arrests, home demolitions, and the targeting of innocent civilians then the perpetrators have already achieved their objective,” she said.
Mufti called for an impartial investigation into the death. “Allegations of misconduct whether in Bandipora encounter or in this latest incident in Kulgam are deeply troubling and warrant a thorough impartial investigation,” she added.
The body of a 23-year-old youth was recovered from Nallah at Adbal Wattoo area of DH Pora in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district today.
Police has not revealed anything on the youth’s death yet. However, an official said that Magray was an Over Ground Worker (OGW) and had links with terrorists.
The body was recovered from the Nallah by locals, following which police were informed. A police team reached the spot and took custody of the body for medico-legal formalities.
The official said that this morning when CASO was launched, the deceased went to the hideout spot (near river bed) under close supervision via videographed drone, consequently, he jumped in Vishaw Nallah and probably tried to escape via river route.
