BNP’s student wing demands removal of National Curriculum & Textbook Board heads, calls them fascist allies of Hasina

DHAKA, Apr 27 : The Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) student wing, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), has sharply criticised the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) —

Bangladesh’s top authority on developing school curriculum and textbooks, accusing it of wilfully ignoring the July 2024 Uprising that led to the ouster of PM Sheikh Hasina, in school curricula.

The JCD has demanded the immediate removal of NCTB Chairman Rabiul Kabir Chowdhury and Textbook Member Riad Chowdhury, branding them “fascist allies” of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“While democratic forces at home and abroad have embraced the uprising, the NCTB has remained indifferent,” the party said in its official statement, according to Business Standard BD.

“Their failure to highlight the sacrifices of the martyrs in school curricula shows a deliberate attempt to distort history.”

JCD leaders Rakibul Islam Rakib (President) and Nasir Uddin Nasir (General Secretary) said that the education board was “still nurturing fascism” and warned that without immediate change, future generations would grow up learning a whitewashed version of history.

“The NCTB must be held accountable. If we cannot remove fascist influence from our education system, we cannot expect our children to learn the truth,” they added.

The controversy comes amid growing tensions over the political and ideological influence in Bangladesh’s education sector.

Islamic groups have recently ramped up pressure to reshape textbooks, demanding revisions they claim better reflect “correct” history – raising alarm among secular and progressive voices.
