JAMMU, Feb 17: Describing observance of Block Diwas across Jammu and Kashmir as “unproductive”, MLAs Surjit Singh Slathia and Sajad Shaheen today demanded that this “futile” exercise be stoppage for avoiding wastage of public money.
While participating in the discussion on Demands for Grants on Tuesday, Surjeet Singh Slathia alleged no follow up on the public issues highlighted in the Block Diwas and the recommendations made by the officers.
“There is no fun of holding Block Diwas as there has been no follow up on the demands and recommendations made there. Instead of wasting public money and time on it, this practice should be stopped,” he said.
NC MLA Shajad Shaheen also raised question mark over utility of observing Block Diwas and described the same as wastage of public money because of no follow up exercise.
“Are these Block Diwas productive?. If not, the practice of observing the same be stopped for avoiding public exchequer,” he said and pointed out that MLAs are not invited in the Block Diwas.
Pertinent to mention that Block Diwas is a weekly public outreach programme held across all district in J&K to redress public grievances, ensure on the spot service delivery and enhance rural development. These meetings are led by the Deputy Commissioners concerned.
Surjit Singh Slathia also alleged that senior officers remain busy in video conferencing throughout the day with no ground work. He sought direction from the Chair to Chief Secretary for making the officers accountable to their work .
“If officers remain busy in VC (video conferencing) who will take care of their work and what will be their performance at the ground level? We urge the Government to look into this matter and make officers accountable,” he added.
