SRINAGAR, May 8: After drone and missile attacks by Pakistan on vital installations in Jammu, Kashmir groped in darkness as there was power shutdown across the region as a precautionary measure.

Sirens were also heard at a couple of places in Srinagar before the power shutdown. People rushed home as soon as parts of the Jammu region came under attack.
An official said that heavy shelling was reported from Tangdhar and Uri near the LoC Army posts.
Authorities late in the evening informed that schools, colleges and universities will remain closed across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday and Saturday.
Officials said that keeping in view the safety of students, all the private and Government schools, colleges and universities will remain closed.
Meanwhile, KU suspended the class work as well. “It is notified for the information of all concerned that class work at Main Campus and all satellite campuses of the University of Kashmir shall remain suspended on May, 9, 2025,” university spokesperson stated.
Earlier, in the day several families living near the Line of Control (LoC) were evacuated today and moved to safer locations amid heightened tensions along the border and continued shelling from Pakistan.
According to officials in Kupwara, nearly 100 families were evacuated from areas such as Tangdhar, Keran and Machil and shifted to safer locations.
In Uri, officials stated that 80 individuals were evacuated from villages near the LoC and relocated to safer areas.
Officials said a three-tier evacuation setup is in place, with health and other essential facilities available at the temporary shelters.
While the shelling was ongoing in the frontier areas at the time of filing this report, locals expressed satisfaction with the administration’s timely efforts in relocating them to safety.
“The Indian Army responded proportionately,” the statement added.
