“We will never want the separation of Jammu from Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir is one, and we have made sacrifices for this,” BJP state spokesperson Rajni Sethi said while addressing a press conference here.
Sethi alleged that Jammu had been consistently ignored during National Conference (NC)-led Governments, claiming the party focused only on Muslims while neglecting the concerns of the Jammu region.
“The people of Jammu are unhappy. People in Jammu are asking what benefit they have received from remaining together-this reflects the emotional sentiment of the people,” she said.
Clarifying the BJP’s stand, Sethi said that despite individual statements made by others, the party believed in unity.
“We have made sacrifices for ‘ek vidhan, ek nishan, ek pradhan’. We will never forget those sacrifices. Jammu and Kashmir are one, and we are working for that,” she said.
Criticising the National Conference (NC)-led Government, Sethi called on the people of Kashmir to “wake up” and hold the Government accountable for what she described as its failure to deliver on election promises and its attempts to create divisions.
Referring to the period after 2014, she said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had worked for the development of Jammu and Kashmir “without differentiating between Hindus and Muslims.”
Accusing the NC Government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of indulging in divisive politics, Sethi said statements by the Chief Minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti were aimed at disturbing communal harmony.
“Such remarks are meant to pit Jammu against Kashmir. Is he the Chief Minister of only one religion?” she asked.
Criticising comments opposing “Hindutva”, she said such statements were intended to provoke people in Jammu and damage the image of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Hindutva means love for the nation. Muslims are Indians too,” she said, adding that such rhetoric adversely affected people from J&K working in other parts of the country.
She alleged that irresponsible political statements were “causing greater harm than terrorism by isolating Kashmir and creating suspicion about its people.”
Warning of public anger, Sethi said, “The day the people of Jammu come out on the streets, neither the Chief Minister nor Iltija Mufti will be seen anywhere.”
