JAMMU, May 20: Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Vikram Malhotra today launched membership drive of the Congress party in Jammu East constituency today.
Former Minister and PCC vice president,  Raman Bhalla, who is also the in-charge of the membership drive for Jammu City (Urban),  presided over the programme, which was organized here at  Purani Mandi. It was also attended by senior Congress leaders and prominent persons of the society besides a huge gathering comprising of men, women and the youth.
Manmohan Singh,  senior Congress leader,  Anil Chopra, president, District Congress Committee (DCC), Jammu (U) and other members also graced the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr  Malhotra  deliberated upon the aim and objectives of the party’s membership drive. He said it was basically meant for strengthening the Congress party at the grass-root level, besides making public  aware of the misdeeds of the BJP-PDP Government.
“Diversion of AIIMS from Jammu to Kashmir and shelving of Artificial Lake Project over river Tawi are major examples of discrimination with Jammu region, which will not be tolerated and Congress will not let this happen,”  Vikram Malhotra added.
In his address, Mr  Bhalla condemned the approach of the BJP-PDP Government and criticized both the coalition partners for diversion of establishment of AIIMS Hospital from Jammu to Kashmir, and also for shelving the prestigious Artificial Lake Project on the river Tawi.
“After gaining power, the BJP has surrendered the interests of Jammu region to the PDP, which is nothing but a grim example of appeasement policy,” he said.
Mr Bhalla also targeted the Mufti-led Government for sheltering the anti-national elements in Jammu and Kashmir and alleged that the release of separatist leader, Masrat Alam was a major example of its hidden appeasement policy.
Manmohan Singh alleged that several prestigious schemes launched by the previous UPA Government at the Centre have been stopped by the present BJP Government, because of which the poor people are made to suffer without any reason.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Thomas Khokhar- secretary,   Pawan Dev Singh and Sardar Singh- both Block presidents.
