The by-elections to the Nagrota Assembly seat were necessitated after the death of its sitting member and senior BJP leader, Devender Singh Rana last year while the Budgam seat was vacated by the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah as he had also contested from Ganderbal Assembly segment a traditional seat of his family and was elected from both the seats.
