Omar should resign on moral grounds: Sharma

SRINAGAR, Oct 29: The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate for Budgam Assembly bypoll Syed Mohsin today filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct and the party demanded resignation of the CM.

A BJP spokesperson said the complaint pertains to the statement made by Omar in the Assembly, wherein he announced the commencement of academic work of National Law University at Ompora in Budgam district which falls in Budgam Assembly constituency which is voting on November 11.

The spokesperson alleged that the announcement made by the Chief Minister on the floor of the House is being widely circulated across media platforms and social networks.
“It appears to be intended to influence the electorate of Budgam segment by projecting imminent developmental benefits in the constituency,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Sunil Sharma said that the Chief Minister had violated the MCC by announcing the opening of National Law University classes in Budgam.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly here, Sharma said that Omar’s announcement on the floor of the House regarding the commencement of classes for the National Law University at Ompora, Budgam, amounted to a violation of election guidelines.
“On the floor of the House, Omar gave assurance to open the classes of the National Law University in Budgam, which is against the MCC,” Sharma said. “For this mistake, he should resign on moral grounds,” he added.
While replying to a resolution in the Assembly for setting up a National Law University, the Chief Minister said if everything goes according to plan, the varsity will start academic work in the month of April.
