JAMMU, Mar 21: Former minister and JKPCC general secretary, Yogesh Sawhney today alleged that BJP is `brazenly looting’ the people of the country by imposing heavy taxes.
Addressing a meeting of the party organised in view of the massive upcoming protests to be held by the Congress party today to demand statehood for J&K, oppose fuel price hike and protest imposition of property tax, Sawhney said people are unable to bear the burden of heavy taxes imposed by Modi Govt.
PCC leader said that the party will project demand through the protest, that the Centre should restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, as was promised in 2019, along with withdrawal of taxes on petrol and diesel. The Centre has imposed massive taxes during last six years.
Sawhney along with District Congress leaders gave necessary instructions for the protest. He said that the Congress Party has to keep fighting the injustices of this Government. The Centre had said that J&K will be given back it’s statehood at the “appropriate” time, but didn’t outlined a clear timeline of doing so. He said that it’s high time that the BJP Government begins the process of returning the UT to its former glory and giving it it’s democratic right.
“People want that statehood is restored in J&K so that they can elect their own representatives and enjoy the autonomy other States enjoy. It is extremely unfair for us that we have no rights to govern ourselves according to our own unique needs and social situations because the Centre cannot assume that it’s “one size fits all” policy is beneficial,” Sawhney added.
Further taking a swipe at the Centre for the steep hike in fuel prices, former minister said that fuel price rise has hampered the life of a common citizen and the Central Government is imposing heavy taxes on petrol and diesel. The Government has been resorting to exploitative and unreasonable measures in extorting maximum benefit from people even in distressing times. It’s not just increasing fuel prices through heavy duties, it’s also the imposition of property tax in J&K .
Prominent district Congress leaders Kanta Bhan (vice president PCC), Thakur Manmohan Singh, general secretary PCC and Rajnish Sharma Co-treasurer JKPCC attended the meeting.
