Biden administration plans to limit nicotine levels in cigarettes

Washington, June 22: The Biden administrations plans to set limits on the amount of nicotine in cigarettes to reduce the product’s addictiveness, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) said in a press release.
“Today, the Biden-Harris Administration published plans for future potential regulatory actions that include the US Food and Drug Administration’s plans to develop a proposed product standard that would establish a maximum nicotine level to reduce the addictiveness of cigarettes and certain other combusted tobacco products,” the release said on Tuesday.
FDA commissioner Robert Lowering in the release said lowering nicotine levels to “minimally addictive or non-addictive levels” would help current addicted smokers quit and decrease chances of addiction among future generations.
In a 2018 study the FDA projected that by 2100 a nicotine limit could reduce the smoking rate from 12.5% to 1.4 percent and save more than eight million lives, the release added.
