Bhasha gives public lecture on Nadim’s Opera Vitasta

JAMMU, July 21: Bhasha Sumbli who is widely known for her Stellar portrayal of ‘Sharda Pandit’ in the blockbuster film ‘The Kashmir Files’ today said that art has been in the nerves of Kashmiri people since the times immemorial.
Giving a public lecture on legendary Kashmiri writer Dina Nath Nadim’s Classic Opera Vitasta here, which has been revived by her after 50 years and to be presented by her troupe for people of Jammu on July 23 at Abhinav Theatre said the late poet and writer would have to see the revival of his artistic work.
Bhasha made an appeal to budding artists of J&K that they should dedicate themselves for revival of the traditional art of Jammu and Kashmir. She, while making a reference to Acharya Abhinav Gupt a great Shivachariya of Kashmir said his commentary (Critical appreciation) of Bharat Muni’s Natishastra is in itself thought provoking as it is said that neither any scholar has been able to make such a critical appreciation on any artistic work nor would be done in future.
She said Kashmiris belong to such a rich legacy which they have to keep intact and the younger generations should take pride in joining the field of acting which has been a part of our culture from times immemorial.
Bhasha Sumbli, the illustrious daughter of the soil is also known widely as an NSD alumna and a national Youth Theatre Icon with Sangeet Natak Akademi Yuva Puruskar, Ministry of Culture-Government of India’s ‘Fellowship to Young Outstanding Artist’, ‘Sharika Sammaan’, ‘Vitasta Purusharth Sammaan’, ‘Inlaks Theatre Award’ (She is also the first NSD graduate to receive the this Award) and many other honors to her credit.
She while commenting on Pandit Dina Nath Nadim said the legendary writer and poet needs no introduction. The trendsetter poet, thinker, dramaturge, decorated with Sahitya Akademi Puruskar, Soviet Land Nehru Award, and many others was much ahead of his time, was the pride of J&K.
This opera ‘Vitasta’ was initially directed by Padma Shri Pran Kishore Kaul in the 1970s, with great singers namely Ghulam Hassan Sofi, Kailash Mehra Sadhu, Shameem Dev Azad and others lending their golden voices to Virender Mohan’s immortal compositions.
Bhasha said she has chosen to revive this classic opera, in authentic Kashmiri flavour taking research based references for each theatrical improvisation. It is directed by her and performed by her theatre troupe Hima Kaul Kalanidhi (HiKaKa), Jammu.
