Bhalla for strengthening horticulture industry

*JKHPMC earns net profit of Rs 2.51 cr

SRINAGAR, July 11: The 56th meeting of Board of Directors of J&K Horticulture Produce Marketing & Processing Corporation Limited (JK HPMC) was held here today under the chairmanship of Minister for Housing, Horticulture & Culture, Raman Bhalla.
Minister of State for Animal Husbandry & Horticulture, Nazir Ahmed Gurezi, Principal Secretary, Finance, B.B. Vyas, Commissioner/Secretary, Agriculture & Horticulture, Dr. Asgar Samoon, Managing Director, Small Farmers Agriculture Consortium, New Delhi, Parvesh Sharma, former Head Food Technology Division and Advisor, Government of India, A. K. Bhatia, Director Horticulture (Planning & Marketing), Showkat Zargar, Director Horticulture, Kashmir, Sonam Narboo, Director Horticulture, Jammu, Anil Kumar Sharma, Managing Director, JKHPMC, Syed Rafiq Ahmad and Chairman, Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers and Traders Association, Ghulam Rasool Wagay were present in the meeting.
The Board held threadbare discussion on the overall functioning of the Corporation and reviewed the Action Taken Report (ATR) of decisions taken in the previous Board meetings. The Board expressed satisfaction on the performance of the Corporation and stressed the need for taking more innovative measures to improve the health of the Corporation to make it a self-reliant and profit earning organization.
The Members suggested several measures to revive various sick units of the Corporation in a phased manner. They called for framing a well-thought out programme for boosting the activities of the Corporation.
The meeting approved most of the proposals of the Corporation, which were included in the agenda and endorsed its several genuine demands, which included revival of various sick units, replacement of outlived equipment, eviction of Corporation’s assets from the possession of para-military forces, construction of cold storages, spreading the network of its sale outlets at important and crowded locations and some new initiatives to boost the economy of the Corporation. The Board recommended the active involvement of private players, particularly the fruit traders/growers in the construction of Cold Storages.
In his brief address, Mr. Bhalla said that Jammu and Kashmir is one of the largest fruit producing States in the country and Government has been making all out efforts to tap its optimal potential. He called upon the JKHPMC functionaries to double their efforts to boost the activities and promote the State’s fruit products.
He stressed the need for a coordinated approach and identifying new areas for business activities. He asked them to furnish a comprehensive proposal for the revival of sick and abandoned units to the Government for appropriate decisions. He also called for reaping the benefits of various Central sponsored schemes for strengthening the horticulture industry so that the benefits of these schemes reach to the farmers.
Mr. Bhalla stressed the need for evolving modernized techniques for promoting the products, adding that in the era of competitiveness, the Corporation must take necessary steps to make their presence in the market. He assured the Corporation to address its genuine and outstanding issues on merit.
The MD, JKHPMC informed the meeting that during the past three years the Corporation has done brisk business and expanded its activities in various areas.
He informed that during the year 2012-13, the Corporation has registered a record turnover of Rs. 12.52 crore and earned a net profit of Rs. 2.51 crore. He said the Corporation has set a target of Rs. 4.50 crore profits during the current fiscal.
