Belarusian air defense systems intercept drone over Minsk, no casualties- Defense Ministry

MINSK,  July 29 : Belarusian air defense forces on duty intercepted an unidentified drone over the capital of Minsk, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday, adding that there were no casualties.

“At about 2 a.m. [23:00 GMT on Monday] on July 29, the air defense forces on duty detected and intercepted an unidentified aerial target – a violator of the airspace use rules, identified as a UAV – in the airspace of Belarus. As a result of the impact of electronic warfare equipment on it, at 02:33 the UAV crashed… in Minsk,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that there were no casualties.

The Investigative Committee of Belarus, which is looking into the details of the drone crash, said that the drone was equipped with explosives.

“A criminal investigation team worked at the scene. An investigator, with the assistance of experts from the State Committee of Forensic Expertise and a bomb disposal team, conducted an inspection and documented the trace evidence,” the committee said.

They found fragments of the drone’s fuselage and wings, its engine, navigation equipment, and a warhead packed with TNT and a large number of small metal balls.

The preliminary investigation shows that the drone fell without exploding in the courtyard of a house in Matusevich Street. The debris damaged several cars and fell on the territory adjacent to the building. Evacuation was not required.
