BCC chairman to be appointed shortly: Sajjad Lone

SRINAGAR, June 30: Minister for Social Welfare, Sajjad Gani Lone today informed the House that Government has adopted specific criteria / parameters for declaring any area as backward area through J&K State Commission for backward classes.
Replying to a question by Mohammad Amin Bhat, the Minister said that Section-11 (1 ) of the J&K State Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1997 provides that Government may at any time, and shall, at the expiry of 10 years from the coming into force of this Act and every succeeding period of 10 years thereafter, undertake revision of the lists with a view to excluding from such lists those classes who have ceased to be backward classes or for including in such lists new backward classes.
The Minister said the said exercise is a continual process and shall be undertaken in consultation with backward classes commission at appropriate time depending upon the improvement of indicators in already notified already areas.
In response to the supplementaries, the Minister said that Government would appoint Chairman J&K State Commission for Backward Classes shortly and all the pending issues regarding backward areas would be sought out. He said that genuine demands for declaring backward areas in the state would be looked into on priority.
