Bathing, swimming banned in water bodies across Rajouri, Tral

RAJOURI/SRINAGAR, June 26: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have imposed strict restrictions on swimming, bathing and recreational activities in water bodies in Rajouri and Tral areas to safeguard public health and prevent loss of life.
In Rajouri, the District Administration has imposed a complete ban on swimming, bathing, fishing and loitering near rivers, nallahs, streams and waterfalls with immediate effect. The order, issued by District Magistrate Abhishek Sharma, cited frequent incidents of drowning caused by strong undercurrents, unpredictable depths, and slippery terrain. School and college excursions near water bodies now require prior administrative permission.
The ban has been enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), and violators will face strict legal action. SSP Rajouri and other concerned officials have been directed to ensure effective implementation of the order throughout the district.
Meanwhile, in South Kashmir’s Tral sub-division, authorities have banned bathing in Lam Nallah-one of the key drinking water sources for residents of tehsil Aripal-following reports of water contamination and a rise in jaundice cases, particularly among children.
Officials from the Jal Shakti Department, backed by local complaints, linked the contamination to daily bathing and unhygienic activities at the site. Notably, a similar health crisis was reported from the same water source last year.
Taking cognizance, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Tral has instructed the Tehsildar Aripal to enforce the ban, install informative hoardings, and raise awareness through social media and other platforms. The SDPO Tral has also been directed to maintain strict vigil in the area to prevent further pollution.
