NEW DELHI, Apr 9: An exhibition showcasing the ‘Ayodhya Kand’ from the Ramayana, painted in the traditional Basohli style, has been inaugurated in New Delhi.
As per a statement, Dr Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) inaugurated the event with Saleem Beg, State Convener of INTACH for J&K and Ladakh, as the guest of honour and Partap Anand Jha, Dean Academics at IGNCA, as the chief guest.
The exhibition has been carefully curated by Sarabjeet Singh, a scholar from Patiala University, along with his wife Harpreet.
The duo researched the sequence of paintings and created contextual captions to help viewers understand the stories behind the artwork.
The paintings on display are part of a private collection belonging to Suresh Abrol. They were earlier showcased in 2017 at IGNCA, New Delhi, during a national exhibition titled Ramayana Tradition.
Back then, the artwork was loaned by the Shashvat Art Gallery – Museum & Manuscripts Library, Jammu, which was among 21 institutions selected from across the country.
The statement said that the exhibition highlights the rich visual storytelling tradition of Basohli painting, one of the oldest schools of miniature art in Jammu and Kashmir.
Visitors can expect to see powerful depictions of Ram’s exile, the emotional moments with Kaikeyi and Dasharatha, and other scenes from the ‘Ayodhya Kand’ chapter of the Ramayana.
