Baramulla admn cracks down on illegal mining

SRINAGAR, Sept 25: The District Administration Baramulla today carried out a major raid in Khanpora against illegal stone mining, which has raised concerns over safety and environmental damage.
The officials seized several vehicles and heavy machinery, including tippers and excavators, allegedly used for unauthorized quarrying. The raid follows growing complaints from locals about mining in Khanpora and nearby areas, which they say has caused environmental damage and increased landslide risks. A recent stone slide had heightened fears and calls for action.
Authorities said legal action has been started under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible. The seized machinery has been impounded, and cases registered at local police stations. “This is part of our ongoing effort to stop illegal mining and protect natural resources. We will continue strict action against violators,” DMO Sarfaraz Ahmad said.
Officials warned repeat offenders will face heavy fines and imprisonment and urged locals to report violations. Regular inspections will continue to prevent future illegal mining.
