Addressing media persons here today, SSP Ramban Arun Gupta said on September 8, Police Station Banihal received information about the recovery of three bodies from a culvert along the NH-44 at Ratanwas village, some 3 kilometres from Banihal towards Ramban side.
He said the victims were identified as Dhanwantri Devi, wife of late Nand Kishore of Champaran, Bihar, her daughter Suhani Kumari (9), and son Yash Kumar (5).
The police officer said the bodies were shifted to SDH Banihal for post-mortem and a Board of Doctors was constituted for examination.
During the investigation, he said, police suspected that the culprits had used the railway route to dump the bodies.
Accordingly, the CCTV footage arranged from Khari and Banihal railway stations showed an unknown man travelling with the victims on September 6, he said.
“Further leads came when local drivers were questioned and one of them informed the police that he had ferried the accused and the victims to Chamalwas area and received payment through UPI,” the police officer said.
The SSP Ramban said by tracking the digital trail of the UPI transaction, police identified the accused as Anil Kumar of Champaran, Bihar. He was later traced and arrested, he said.
SSP Gupta further said the accused had been living in an illicit relationship with the victim and allegedly murdered her and the children after being pressured to marry, as he was already married.
He said currently the investigation in the case is underway.
“After the probe is completed, a chargesheet will be filed in the court, seeking fast-track trial and capital punishment for the accused by highlighting this case as the ‘rarest of the rare’ crime,” added the SSP Ramban.
