NEW DELHI, Dec 4: Acclaimed Theatre Director and former Cultural Diplomat of India, Padma Shri Balwant Thakur here today called on Union Minister for Tourism & Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and discussed with him an extensive cultural vision for India.
Thakur emphasised the urgent need to re-imagine and revitalise the country’s cultural ecosystem.
He noted that although India stands as a global cultural superpower, blessed with unparalleled diversity and heritage, there is a pressing necessity to introduce new methodologies and contemporary approaches that can effectively protect, promote and project Indian culture at both national and international levels.
Thakur underscored that India’s rich cultural identity, if channelled through innovative frameworks, has the potential to become one of the strongest pillars of India’s global soft power. He proposed a series of forward-looking interventions aimed at strengthening cultural infrastructure, nurturing creative talent and repositioning Indian culture in a rapidly transforming world.
One of the major concerns expressed by Thakur during the meeting was the diminishing cultural awareness among the younger generations. He stressed the importance of sensitising, educating and empowering youth with authentic cultural knowledge so that they develop a deep sense of pride in India’s heritage rather than succumbing to indiscriminate imitation of Western influences.
The Union Minister appreciated Balwant Thakur’s longstanding contribution to Indian culture and acknowledged the value of his insights. The meeting concluded with an understanding that the Ministry would examine the proposed ideas and explore avenues to integrate them into upcoming cultural initiatives and long-term national strategies.
