JAMMU, Jan 13: Senior BJP leader and former Health Minister, Bali Bhagat unleashed a blistering, no-holds-barred attack on the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) Government, accusing it of gross mismanagement, broken promises and deliberately neglecting the people of Jammu at the worst possible time – peak Winter.
Bhagat said the Government’s election pledge of free electricity and 24×7 power has been exposed as a “sham and a political deceit.” “In the dead of Winter, when temperatures have plunged and families, children and the elderly are struggling to stay warm, the NC Government has plunged Jammu into extended darkness instead of providing even basic electricity. This isn’t governance – it’s an outright betrayal and gross callousness,” he said.
He pointed out that while the NC rhetoric promised uninterrupted power, the reality is daily power cuts of up to 10-12 hours or more, bringing households, traders, students and patients to the brink of crisis. “This isn’t occasional disruption – it is routine darkness, every day, every Winter night,” Bhagat thundered.
Bhagat highlighted that despite the installation of smart meters, the electricity situation has deteriorated rather than improved, with citizens receiving inflated bills while power supply dwindles. “Smart meters should have meant smarter service. Instead they have become a tool to punish consumers,” he charged.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson and former Vice Chairman, Balbir Ram Rattan has also expressed grave concern over prolonged and erratic power cuts across the Jammu region, stating that the unreliable electricity supply has made the harsh Winter conditions even more unbearable for the people.
In a statement Balbir said that frequent power outages, especially during early mornings and late nights when temperatures fall sharply, have caused immense hardship. He noted that the biting cold combined with long power cuts has pushed people into distress, with children, senior citizens and patients being the worst affected due to their vulnerability to cold-related ailments.
He pointed out that electricity is a basic necessity during Winters, as most households depend on electric heaters, blowers and geysers to keep warm. However, unpredictable power supply has rendered these appliances useless. Power cuts without prior notice, he said, leave families helpless in freezing conditions.
BJP leader, Aseem Gupta also expressed serious concern over the long power cuts, during the chilling Winter and urged the Government to immediately take a call over the issue.
Gupta taking strong exception to power situation during past few days as a result the people especially aged, ailing and children are facing great hardships.
He said, “There is hue and cry amongst people in entire Jammu region for the past few days resulting in a resentment amongst them over the issue. The hospitals in rural areas are also worst affected due to this power crisis.”
He urged the Omar Abdullah Government to take an immediate call on the power situation and improve the same for relief to the people.
