JAMMU, Feb 14: An awareness workshop on “Municipal Solid Waste Management–Policies, Constraints, Strategies and Available Technologies” was organised by Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board, Jammu.
Abdul Razak, IFS, Chairman, J&K SPCB was the chief guest on this occasion while KL Khajuria, Director, Urban Local Bodies, Jammu was the special invitee.
The event started with the release of “status report on MSW Management in Jammu region” published by J&K SPCB, Jammu.
Abdul Razak said that such workshop ensures effective implementation of the MSW Rules in the State and work done regarding the inventorization of MSW in Jammu region. He requested all the stakeholders to comply with the said rules at the earliest. He also emphasized that MSW management is at an infancy stage in J&K and State Government is keen to boost many MSW options including recycling facilities.
Javed Iqbal Punjoo, Member Secretary, J&K SPCB apprised the participants about the generation of increasing quantities of MSW with changing life styles.
Joint Commissioner, JMC, Kapil Sharma apprised that land has been identified to establish MSW Management facility in Jammu and necessary steps have been taken to finalise the DPR for the same.
Director, Urban Local Bodies, Jammu, KL Khajuria talked about the operational vermicomposting facilities in Jammu and steps being taken to implement the DPRs finalized for other districts alongwith the constraints being faced by urban local bodies in execution of the same.
Resource person, Former Director, MoEF Dr Lakshmi Raghupathy talked about the manual on solid waste management and hierarchy for integrated solid waste management to be followed by municipal bodies.
Presentation were followed by Panel Discussion headed by Jivanand Sharma, EE, J&K SPCB with other members including MM Shah, Legal Advisor, J&K SPCB, Neelu Sharma, Principal Scientific Officer, J&K SPCB, Jammu, Dr Sabeena Sultan, Incharge Scientist ‘C’, J&K SPCB and Anuradha Gupta, Scientist ‘A’ SPCB, Jammu.
In the end, vote of thanks was presented by Showkat Chowdhary, Regional Director, SPCB Jammu.
