Attempt to torch College, 3 schools burnt

SRINAGAR, Nov 3: Miscreants last night attempted to torch SP College Srinagar by hurling a petrol bomb and torched two schools while normal life remained disrupted in Kashmir for 118th consecutive day today.
Police said miscreants attempted to set prestigious SP College in Srinagar on fire by hurling a petrol bomb towards the College last night. Police said that the attack resulted in partial damage to some windowpanes and it was brought under control immediately. The police have registered a case and the investigation has been started.
Miscreants also set on fire Government High School Dugpora Anchar in Soura area of Srinagar. The school suffered partial damage in the blaze incident as fire tenders rushed to the spot immediately.
Miscreants also set on fire Government Primary School Goripora in Safa Kadal area of Srinagar. The school suffered partial damage in the blaze as fire tenders rushed to the spot immediately.
Miscreants set on fire Government Middle School Astanpora in Naidkhai area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir. The school suffered partial damage in the blaze incident as fire tenders rushed to the spot immediately. This is the 30th school that was set ablaze during the unrest by miscreants.
At Bindu in Kokernag area of Anantnag, miscreants set ablaze Board of School Education (BOSE) office last night. However, it was damaged partially.
Miscreants also torched ARTO office in Sopore of North Kashmir. However, fire tenders rushed to the spot and it suffered minor damage.
In the meantime, shutdown was observed across Kashmir for 118th consecutive day today.
Security forces were deployed in five police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Rainawari and Khanyar – since early morning to prevent any violence. There was, however, civilian movement without any disruption in all these areas.
At Anchar Soura, Safa Kadal and Eidgah, strict restrictions were imposed by security forces in the wake of yesterday’s violence. Security forces had sealed these areas with concertina wires to prevent any movement of traffic and people to prevent violence.
In Civil Line and uptown areas of the Srinagar, the routine movement of private transport and pedestrians was once again seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments and educational institutes were closed. However, vendors had set up stalls in Batamaloo, Lal Chowk, TRC, Residency Road and Jawahar Nagar areas and there was huge rush of shoppers.
Clashes were reported from Sabzi Mandi Soura in Srinagar and Bandipora between protesters and security forces. Police fired teargas towards protesters and the situation was brought under control.
In Punew market in Bugam area of district Kulgam militants this evening fired in air to force shutdown. The shops in the area which had opened were closed immediately.
A police spokesman said: “the overall situation across the Valley remained largely under control and peaceful. No untoward incident was reported from any party of the Valley till filing of this report.  The day witnessed normal movement of people and vehicular traffic on the city roads as well as in other main towns of the Valley. Vendors in large number were seen on the streets of the city as also in the main towns of the Valley with a huge number of shoppers busy in shopping at these places.
“The workers of Peace Movement Party protested at press enclave Srinagar and were demanding the opening of the school in the Valley. As a precautionary measure necessary deployment was made on some vulnerable points of the city as well as in other main towns to thwart away any untoward incident hampering normal life and disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.”
