UDHAMPUR, Sept 6: Foiling an attempt of major tax evasion worth lakhs of rupees, the Vigilance wing of Commercial Tax Department has seized huge quantity of Bidis, which were being transported without clearance of the Sales Tax Check Post, near Udhampur Railway Station.
Sources said that a team, under the supervision of Commissioner Commercial Taxes and Deputy Commissioner, Vigilance (CT), intercepted two load carriers during a naka near Udhampur Railway Station and found that both the vehicles were carrying goods without declaration of the ownership as well as clearance of the check post.
The Vigilance team seized both the vehicles along with the goods (Bidis), which are approximated to be worth Rs 25 lakh. A case under Section 67 of VAT Act has been registered in this connection.
Pertinent to mention that tobacco products are levied 40 percent Sales Tax and thus the sleuths of Vigilance (CT) have foiled an attempt of major tax evasion of approximately Rs 10 lakhs.
